New Tax Agent Code of Professional Conduct

Important Update: New Tax Agent Code of Professional Conduct – Effective 1 July 2025

You may not be aware that tax agents in Australia are bound by a formal Code of Professional Conduct. This Code sets the ethical and professional standards that guide how we work with you and the ATO.

From 1 July 2025, an updated version of this Code will come into effect. These changes are designed to strengthen trust in the tax system and better protect your interests as a taxpayer.

So, what is the Code of Professional Conduct?

The Code outlines the standards registered tax agents must meet when providing tax services. It covers things like:

  • Acting honestly and with integrity
  • Keeping your personal and financial information confidential
  • Acting in your best interests
  • Maintaining professional competence
  • Ensuring services are provided lawfully and ethically

What’s changing?

The updated Code introduces clearer, more robust standards to help ensure tax agents:

  • Are more transparent in how we communicate with clients
  • Are held to higher standards of ethical behaviour
  • Continue to meet their professional obligations with up-to-date skills and knowledge
  • Are subject to stronger disciplinary action when the Code is breached

What does this mean for you?

If you’re already working with a registered and ethical tax agent (like us), these changes likely won’t affect you day to day. But it does provide greater assurance that your agent is held to high standards and is accountable for the advice and services they provide.

If you ever have questions or concerns about the advice you’re receiving, you can have confidence knowing there is a strong regulatory framework in place to support and protect you.
